JEE Advanced 2026 Outlook

IIT Cutoffs 2026

The ultimate goal for engineering aspirants. We have categorized the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology into 3 tiers to help you target the right college based on your JEE Advanced Rank.

The Elite Club

Top 100 AIR is the benchmark for CSE in IIT Bombay or Delhi. These are the most competitive seats in the country.

New Branches

Branches like AI & Data Science and MnC (Maths & Computing) are seeing cutoffs higher than ECE/Electrical.

Safe Rank

A rank of 16,000 is generally the closing line for General category students to enter the IIT ecosystem.

Factors Determining IIT Cutoffs

Cutoffs for IITs depend heavily on the difficulty of the JEE Advanced paper. Historically, whenever the paper is tougher (low scoring), the rank vs marks ratio changes, but the **Rank Cutoffs** remain relatively stable.

Category Ranks: The ranks mentioned above are Common Rank List (CRL) ranks. For OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, and ST candidates, the qualifying ranks are significantly lower. Female supernumerary seats (usually 20%) also ensure that female candidates can secure seats at lower ranks compared to the open pool.

Branch vs College Dilemma

A common question is: "Old IIT Lower Branch or New IIT CSE?". Generally, for Tier 1 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras), even lower branches (Civil, Chemical) offer exceptional exposure and non-core placement opportunities. However, if you are passionate about coding, choosing CSE in a Tier 2 IIT like Hyderabad or Indore is often a wiser career move than a non-circuital branch in an Old IIT.
