How JEE Percentile is Calculated?

Your JEE Main Percentile is not the same as your percentage. It is a normalized score that indicates your relative position among all test-takers in your session.

The NTA uses the following formula:

(100 × No. of candidates with raw score ≤ your score) / Total candidates in session

This normalization ensures fair comparison across different shifts with varying difficulty levels. A score of 180 marks might yield a 99%ile in a tough shift but only 98.5%ile in an easy shift.

Comprehensive Guide to JEE Main 2026 Ranking

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is one of the most competitive engineering entrance exams. Understanding how your raw marks translate into a percentile and eventually an All India Rank (AIR) is crucial for planning your admission strategy.

How to Calculate Rank from Percentile?

Many students ask, "How do I convert my percentile to Rank?" The formula is straightforward but depends on the total number of unique candidates (N).

Rank = ((100 - P) / 100) * N + 1

  • P: Your NTA Percentile Score

  • N: Total Number of Candidates (Expected ~15.5 Lakhs in 2026)

Example: If you score 99.00 percentile and 15,50,000 students appear, your rank would be roughly 15,501.
