Understanding MHT-CET Percentile, Rank & CAP Rounds
Why percentile matters for CAP rounds: During Maharashtra's Centralized Admission Process, colleges establish cutoff percentiles rather than cutoff marks. Engineering branches at premier institutes like VJTI, COEP, and ICT Mumbai set high percentile thresholds that vary annually based on seat availability and applicant pool quality. Your percentile directly determines which branch-college combinations you can realistically target during preference filling.
Strategic Approach to College Selection: For CAP rounds, experts suggest dividing your preference list into Dream, Target and Safe colleges for better results. Dream colleges are those where past cutoffs are 2,000–5,000 ranks above your estimate, Target colleges fall within 500–1,000 ranks of your predicted rank, and Safe colleges are those where you are at least 3,000 ranks ahead of previous cutoffs.
Why Percentile vs Rank Mapping Is Non-Linear: Percentile and rank in MHT-CET do not change linearly; small percentile jumps at high levels (99+ percentile) can shift rank by thousands, while the same change in mid-percentiles causes much smaller rank movement. This happens due to score clustering and the bell-curve distribution, where most students fall in the middle ranges and far fewer score at the extremes, causing rank gaps to widen at top percentiles and compress in the mid range.
How Percentile Converts to Rank: MHT CET percentile represents how you performed compared to other candidates appearing for the exam. A higher percentile means fewer candidates scored above you. Since MHT CET uses normalization across multiple shifts, your percentile—not raw marks—determines your rank. Our predictor analyzes this percentile along with previous year cutoffs to estimate your likely rank range accurately.
