KAIST Campus

Introduction

If Seoul National University is the "Harvard" of Korea, then KAIST is the "MIT."

Located in Daejeon (South Korea's Science City), KAIST is widely regarded as the best technical university in the country. But for Indian students, KAIST has one massive advantage over every other Korean university: English is the official language of instruction.

While students at SNU or Yonsei struggle with Korean-taught classes, 80-90% of KAIST classes are taught entirely in English.

For the 2026 intake, KAIST is the ultimate "hidden gem." It offers the KAIST International Student Scholarship, which guarantees Full Tuition Waiver + Monthly Stipend to almost every admitted international student. If you are an engineer or scientist, this is your best ROI option in Asia.

In this guide, we break down the famous KAIST Scholarship, the English-friendly campus, and why you don't need to know Korean to thrive here.

Why Choose a KAIST Masters?

  • The "English" Bubble: KAIST is unique in Korea. All lectures, labs, and administrative emails are in English. You can graduate with a Master's degree without speaking a single word of Korean (though learning is recommended for life outside campus).

  • Automatic Full Scholarship: Unlike US universities where you have to "apply" for aid, at KAIST, admission = scholarship. If you are good enough to get in, they pay for everything.

    • Tuition: 100% Waived.

    • Stipend: ~350,000 KRW/month (Masters) for living expenses.

    • Health Insurance: Covered.

  • Research Intensity: KAIST owns the largest research budget per student in Korea. You will work with equipment that even some US universities don't have.

Important Dates (2026 Intake)

KAIST has three major application tracks. Mark these dates carefully.

Intake

Track

Application Period

Spring 2026 (March Start)

Regular

Aug 19 – Sept 2, 2025 (Apply Early!)

Fall 2026 (Sept Start)

Early Track

Dec 2 – Dec 16, 2025

Fall 2026 (Sept Start)

Regular Track

March 3 – March 17, 2026

Pro Tip: Apply for the Spring Intake (Aug 2025) or Fall Early Track (Dec 2025). By the time the "Regular Track" opens in March, many lab seats are already filled.

Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students

KAIST is strictly an Engineering/Science school.

1. Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree: You must have a 4-year Bachelor's degree (B.E./B.Tech).

    • Warning: 3-Year Degrees (B.Sc/BCA) are generally NOT accepted. KAIST follows the 16-year education rule strictly. If you have a 3-year degree, you must have a Master's degree from India to apply.

  • GPA: No official cutoff, but competitive applicants usually have a CGPA of 8.5/10 (85%) or higher from Tier 1/2 Indian colleges.

2. English Proficiency (Mandatory)

Since the campus is English-medium, the requirements are strict.

  • TOEFL iBT: Minimum 83.

  • IELTS Academic: Minimum 6.5 Overall (6.0 in bands is usually safe).

  • TOEIC: Minimum 720 (Listening & Reading).

  • Note: You must upload the score report during the application.

Admission Process: The "Lab Contact" Strategy

While not always mandatory, contacting a professor before applying boosts your chances by 50%.

Step-by-Step Application:

  1. Identify Labs: Browse the department website. Find 2-3 professors whose research aligns with yours.

  2. Online Application: Apply via the KAIST Graduate Admission portal.

  3. Pay Fee: USD 80 (Credit Card).

  4. Upload Documents: Upload scanned PDFs of transcripts, degrees, and English scores.

    • Update: You do NOT need to mail hard copies initially. Hard copies (Apostilled) are only required after you are admitted.

  5. Recommendation Letters: You need 2 referees. You enter their emails in the portal, and they receive a link to upload the letter.

  6. Interview: If shortlisted, the department will contact you for a Skype/Zoom interview.

Fees & Funding (The KAIST Scholarship)

You typically do not pay tuition at KAIST.

Cost Type

Standard Fee

With KAIST Scholarship

Tuition

~12 Million KRW/year

FREE (100% Waived)

Living Stipend

-

+ 350,000 KRW / month

Health Insurance

~60,000 KRW/month

Covered

Note on Stipend: 350,000 KRW is basic pocket money. Most professors top this up with extra research allowance (from their lab funds), bringing your monthly income to 800,000 – 1,000,000 KRW, which is enough to cover food and dorms comfortably.

Scholarships for Indian Students

  • KAIST International Student Scholarship: The default scholarship for 95% of international students.

    • Requirement: Maintain a GPA of 3.0/4.3 to keep receiving it.

  • Global Korea Scholarship (GKS): The government scholarship (covers airfare + higher stipend). You can apply for GKS via KAIST (University Track), but the "KAIST Scholarship" is easier to get.

FAQs

Q1. Do I need to learn Korean for KAIST?

Ans: No. You can complete your entire degree in English. However, living in Daejeon (outside campus) requires basic Korean skills for shopping and transport.

Q2. Is KAIST good for CS/AI?

Ans: Yes. KAIST is ranked in the Global Top 20 for AI and Electrical Engineering. It is the best place in Korea for tech.

Q3. Can I apply with a 3-year B.Sc?
Ans: No. You need 16 years of education. You must complete a Master's (M.Sc) in India first.

Q4. Where is Daejeon? Is it like Seoul?

Ans: Daejeon is 1 hour south of Seoul. It is quieter, cleaner, and cheaper than Seoul. It is known as the "Silicon Valley of Korea" because it houses major research institutes (like ETRI).

Q5. Can I work part-time?

Ans: Generally No. As a KAIST scholarship recipient, you are expected to work in your lab full-time. Your stipend covers your expenses, so you shouldn't need a part-time job.

Conclusion

KAIST is the dream destination for the serious engineer. It strips away the language barrier, removes the tuition burden, and gives you access to world-class labs. If you want a global tech career without the US debt, KAIST is your answer.
