University of Waterloo Masters Review 2026: Rankings, Fees & Admission

University of Waterloo campus

Introduction

If your primary goal is to get a job in Big Tech (Google, Microsoft, Tesla) after graduation, the University of Waterloo is arguably a better choice than even U of T or UBC. Ranked #115 globally (QS 2026), Waterloo is famous for one thing: Co-op.

It runs the world's largest Co-operative Education program, meaning students don't just study; they work full-time in paid roles during their degree. For Indian students, this is a game-changer. A University of Waterloo Masters often includes 4-8 months of paid work experience, allowing you to earn in Canadian Dollars (CAD) while you learn.

For the 2026 intake, Waterloo is a strategic goldmine. Masters graduates are Exempt from the International Student Cap and are eligible for the 3-Year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). While many search for "Post Graduation in Waterloo," choosing a Co-op Masters ensures you graduate with a degree and a Canadian resume.

In this guide, we break down the famous Co-op system, admission for Indian engineers, and why Waterloo is the "MIT of Canada."

Why Choose a University of Waterloo Masters?

University of Waterloo Logo

  • The Co-op Engine: Waterloo students earn between $8,400 to $19,000+ per work term (4 months). Companies like Apple, Amazon, and Facebook actively recruit Waterloo grads because they graduate with 1-2 years of real work experience.

  • Silicon Valley Pipeline: Waterloo sends more graduates to Silicon Valley than any other non-US university. If your dream is to work in California or Seattle, this is your launchpad.

  • Intellectual Property Rights: Uniquely, Waterloo allows students to own 100% of the IP they create during their studies. This has led to the creation of massive startups (like BlackBerry and OpenText) right on campus.

Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students

Waterloo is known for being mathematically rigorous.

1. Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree: A 4-year Bachelor's degree (B.E./B.Tech) is the standard requirement.

  • GRE/GMAT:

    • Computer Science / Engineering: GRE is highly recommended for international students (Score 310+, Quant 165+).

    • Masters in Business (MBET): Optional, but recommended if GPA is low.

2. English Proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL)

  • IELTS Academic: Minimum 6.5 Overall (Writing/Speaking 6.0).

FAQs

Q1. Is the "Post Graduation in Waterloo" worth it?

Ans: If you mean a PG Diploma, Waterloo focuses mostly on Masters Degrees. A Masters is superior because it gives you the 3-Year Work Visa and access to the Co-op network. Diplomas are rare at Waterloo.

Q2. Does every student get Co-op?

Ans: No. Co-op is competitive. You must apply to the "Co-op Stream" of your Master's program. For some programs (like M.Eng), admission to Co-op is not guaranteed and depends on your first-term grades.

Q3. Is Waterloo better than U of T for Engineering?

Ans: For employability and startups, many students prefer Waterloo due to the Co-op program. U of T is often ranked higher for pure research. If you want a job, choose Waterloo.

Q4. Can I work part-time?

Ans: Yes, 20 hours/week. But if you are in a Co-op term, you are working full-time (40 hours/week) and earning a salary, which is much better than a part-time job.

Q5. Is the application fee refundable?

Ans: No. The CAD 125 fee is non-refundable.

Conclusion

The University of Waterloo is the ultimate ROI machine. It doesn't just give you a degree; it gives you a career. With the power of Co-op, you can graduate with Canadian work experience on your resume, making you instantly hireable. For Engineers and Coders, there is no smarter choice for 2026.
