UP Heatwave Red Alert 2026: IMD Issues Severe Warning for Banda, Prayagraj, Jhansi

The UP Heatwave Red Alert 2026 has triggered major concern across Uttar Pradesh as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued severe heatwave warnings for multiple districts including Banda, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Agra, and Chitrakoot.

According to weather officials, temperatures in several districts are expected to rise by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal levels, creating dangerous conditions for residents. Banda recorded one of the highest temperatures in the country, crossing 48°C during the ongoing heatwave spell.

The IMD has advised people to avoid direct sun exposure during afternoon hours and stay hydrated amid rapidly worsening weather conditions.

IMD Red Alert Districts in Uttar Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department has issued a severe heatwave red alert for the following districts:

  • Banda

  • Chitrakoot

  • Prayagraj

  • Fatehpur

  • Agra

  • Firozabad

  • Etawah

  • Hamirpur

  • Jalaun

  • Mahoba

  • Jhansi

The warning remains critical for May 20 and May 21 as heatwave conditions continue to intensify across Bundelkhand and southern Uttar Pradesh.

Banda Becomes One of India’s Hottest Cities

Banda has emerged as the epicenter of the ongoing heatwave crisis. Reports suggest the district recorded temperatures above 48°C, making it one of the hottest places in India for consecutive days.

Meteorologists attribute the temperature spike to:

  • Dry westerly winds

  • Clear sky conditions

  • Intense solar radiation

  • Lack of rainfall activity

Experts believe the heatwave may continue for the next few days before any significant weather relief arrives.

CM Yogi Adityanath Issues Emergency Directives

Following the severe weather warning, Yogi Adityanath instructed district administrations and health departments to remain on high alert.

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered:

  • Heat stroke wards in hospitals to remain ready

  • Ambulance services to stay active

  • Continuous electricity supply

  • Public awareness campaigns

  • Drinking water arrangements in public areas

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak afternoon hours.

Residents are strongly advised to follow these precautions during the heatwave:

Use loose cotton clothing and cover your head while outdoors.

Avoid Heavy Physical Activity

Watch for Heat Stroke Symptoms

Seek immediate medical help in case of:

  • Dizziness

  • High body temperature

  • Vomiting

  • Severe dehydration

The IMD and health authorities warned that elderly people, children, and outdoor workers are most vulnerable during extreme heatwave conditions.

Uttar Pradesh Weather Forecast

The Lucknow Meteorological Centre stated that severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist across several parts of Uttar Pradesh over the next few days.

Forecast highlights include:

  • Day temperatures may remain between 44°C and 48°C

  • Warm night conditions likely in many districts

  • Bundelkhand region expected to remain severely affected

  • No immediate rainfall relief expected

Weather experts indicated that western and central UP may continue experiencing intense hot winds and dry weather patterns.

Why Heatwaves Are Becoming More Severe in India

Climate experts believe rising global temperatures and prolonged dry conditions are increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves across northern and central India.

The IMD previously warned that the 2026 summer season could witness above-normal heatwave days in several regions including Uttar Pradesh.

Urban heat buildup, declining groundwater levels, and changing weather systems are also contributing to worsening summer conditions.
