NExT Exam 2026 eligibility criteria for MBBS students and foreign medical graduates

Introduction: Why NExT Eligibility Is So Confusing

With the National Exit Test (NExT) set to replace NEET-PG and FMGE, medical students across India are asking one critical question:

“Do I have to appear for NExT Exam 2026?”

The confusion exists because different MBBS batches fall under different transition rules. This blog breaks down NExT Exam 2026 Eligibility batch-wise, clearly and practically, based on NMC notifications and academic timelines.

What Is NExT Exam? (Quick Recap)

The National Exit Test (NExT) serves three purposes:

  • Licensing exam to practice medicine in India

  • Entrance exam for PG (MD/MS/DNB) seats

  • Screening exam for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)

NExT has two parts:

  • Step 1 – Theory (decides PG rank)

  • Step 2 – Practical (licensing exam)

NExT Exam 2026 Eligibility: Batch-Wise Breakdown

1. MBBS 2021 Batch (Final Year in 2025–26)

Status: ✅ MANDATORY

If you belong to the 2021 MBBS batch, you must appear for NExT Exam 2026.

Why?

  • NMC has clearly stated that this batch will be the first official NExT batch

  • NExT Step 1 replaces NEET-PG for you

You will use NExT for:

  • Internship eligibility

  • PG admission

  • Medical license

👉 NEET-PG does NOT apply to this batch

2. MBBS 2020 Batch & Earlier (Interns / Graduates)

Status: ⚠️ TRANSITION PHASE (Unclear but likely exempt)

If you are from:

  • 2020 batch

  • 2019 or earlier batches

You may still be allowed to appear for NEET-PG 2026, depending on the final NMC notification.

Current expectation:

  • NExT primarily targets 2021 batch onward

  • Older batches may get one final NEET-PG attempt

👉 Strategy Tip:Prepare clinically (NExT-oriented). This keeps you safe for both NEET-PG and NExT.

3. Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)

Status: ✅ COMPULSORY

For FMGs, NExT is non-negotiable.

Important Changes:

  • NExT replaces FMGE

  • FMGs must clear:

    • NExT Step 1 (Theory)

    • NExT Step 2 (Practical)

  • Internship is allowed only after passing Step 1

👉 If you want to practice in India in or after 2026, NExT is mandatory.

4. BDS / AYUSH / Allied Health Students

Status: ❌ NOT APPLICABLE

NExT is ONLY for MBBS graduates.

It does not apply to:

  • BDS

  • BAMS / BHMS / BUMS

  • Nursing
